Website Design with Words - How to Use Keywords in Your Site Copy

May 12th, 2011 Gregory Smyth

Seventy percent of person-to-person interaction in real life may be non-verbal ... but the same can't be said about the web! While website design, graphical setup and the visual creative are definitely important parts of creating a successful website, the words that your site contains are at least equally important.

Many of us are familiar with thinking about what keywords we use to find something we need. However, incorporating them into website copy that pleases both the search engine optimization side, and the 'human' internet marketing side of your site is a definite art! We look at guidelines for using keywords in your website copy to support your web marketing strategy.

Guideline #1: Less can be more
It is true that Google looks for the presence of a querent's keyword in your website copy in order to direct them to your site. It is also (generally) true that the more times this keyword appears in your site copy, the higher your page will rank for that query.

However, stuffing your copy with keywords (even using a variety of them), can actually get you barred from Google and negate all of your search engine optimization time and cash. Aim for around 5% density of keywords in your site copy. Divide the total number of words in all of the keywords you use, by the total number of words in the body copy to get your density.

Guideline #2: No more than two keywords per page for best SEO marketing Your entire site will probably have a list of ten, twenty or even thirty keywords that are related to your business, and you would want querents to be directed to your site for.

However, each of your pages should focus on two of these keywords at most ... because each of your pages should be focusing on only one area of service at most. This helps not only the robots crawling your site to gain a clear 'picture' of what your page is about, it helps people searching through the site to find clear, concise and segmented information.

Guideline #3: Headlines are four times as important as body copy for keyword inclusion
The Google algorithm (and that used by MSN and Yahoo, for that matter), places much more importance on keywords in the heading than it does on keywords in the body copy. Make sure that you are using headlines that are direct, rather than creative. Your visitors will appreciate this as well, since it makes information much quicker and more straightforward to find.

Guideline #4: Keywords in Anchor Text
Your off page SEO, including link building through article marketing, press release distribution and other parts of your web marketing strategy should all utilize your keywords as well. For best SEO effect, don't just use your business name as the anchor text for a link back to your website.

Use your keywords in the articles and press releases and link these back to your site. If the keyword refers to a specific area of the site, make the link there instead of the home page.
